6/41 Puzzled by the birth of Mary Harpur [13-06-1812] in Husbands Bosworth because this is a long way from Derby. After some investigation this is what has been found:
The Grand Union Canal passes close to the village and the canal was not navigable at that point until the following year (opened 1813).
A kilometre long tunnel was being built in 1812 and, at the northern end, there is a brickfield and kiln.
|
The bricks for the tunnel were made on-site close to the east end of the tunnel, adjacent to the Honeypot Farm bridge. Presumably, the works closed after completion. The probability is that Joseph was in charge of manufacturing the bricks for two or three years and then moved back to Derby. Husbands Bosworth canal tunnel is 1166 yards long with no ventilation shafts. The tunnel pierces the watershed between the Warwickshire Avon to the south, and the Soar valley to the north.
