However, in the second half of the 19th century, the administrative organization of the country changed so the "county" of Santa Marinha was extiguished and São Miguel de Paços became part of the "county" of Gouveia (1852). So, in a nutshell, I am absolutely sure that São Miguel de Passos, termo de Santa Marinha, Bispado de Coimbra is indeed the same as Paços da Serra, county of Gouveia.

Information on the purity of Blood and generation of Luís Lopes dos Santos, master shipbuilder, single, the son of Luís Lopes dos Santos, from the village of Paços de Baixo, judicial circumscription of Guarda, Bishopric of Coimbra, dweller in this city of Lisbon.
We gathered information with the Commissioners Joaquim da Cunha Magalhães, Miguel Mendes and Félix Henriques Vieira about the purity of Blood and more requirements of Luís Lopes dos Santos, who wants to become a Member of the Holly Office of the Inquisition, as stated in the attached petition, that your Lordship ordered to be gathered. And they told us that the applicant by himself, his parents and grandparents is a legitimate and entire old-Christian, of pure blood and generation, without fame or rumours otherwise, that he is single, of good behavior, life and lifestyle, able to be charged with business of importance and secrecy, he knows how to read and write, he lives decently and it is not known that he has any illegitimate children, nor that he, or any of his ancestors may someday have incurred in public infamy or any other serious crime. And it seems to us that he is in condition to the have his requirement deferred by your Lordship, who will do as you think best. Lisbon, in Table 23rd December 1751.

Beroep: Mestre armador ~ Scheepsbouwer (The expression used in Portuguese, mestre armador, is ambiguous as it can mean either a ship builder or a ship owner. However, from the reading of his own application file for the Inquisition, it seems he was the owner of a store that used to sell ship-related goods. Capable of being charged with business of importance and secrecy, he lived decently of the good fortune he had in his store of master builder and that he had eight to nine thousand cruzados [an old gold coin of Portugal having a cross on the reverse].)

Although following the great earthquake of 1755 in which Lisbon was almost totally destroyed, there was a great need of workers for its reconstruction, Luís went to that city together with his brother, much before that event (as small boys).

Joseph Harpur was partner with his brother John at the Rowditch Brickworks. In the early 19th century John and his twin brother Joseph went into partnership and bought the Rowditch Brickworks in Rowditch, Derbyshire. Rowditch had been owned by Abraham Denstone in the 18th century and on his death, was bought by the Harpur brothers, a Mr Tomlinson joining their partnership later.
|
|
The brickworks were situated on the Uttoxeter Road, now the Old Uttoxeter Road, and were one of the most productive in Derbyshire continuing production into the 1930s, though under different owners. After it had ceased production, the land became an industrial waste-ground, until the present day where it is occupied by a supermarket.

The Family Arms are from the 12th century and were duly registered in the British Heraldry as sable on a chevron argentbetween three castles or towers, as many leopards's faces gules, crest a lady attired azure holding in her right hand the sun, and in her sinister the moon.
The latin inscription "TURRIS FORTIS MIHI DEUS" means "God is my strong tower" (in English: Hardcastle)

The Hardcastle' family appears to have been originated from Northumberland and Durham in Saxon times. The family originally owned a very ancient tower in the neighbourhood of the "Hadrian's Wall" from which they first took their name.
